Ah salad! This healthy and easy-to-make dish is always recommended for a healthier lifestyle, but most of us still get confused on how to actually make a healthy salad?
Corporate lawyer turned passionate home cook, @taniadavina, recently opened a healthy eatery and shop @umauma.id to help promote that a healthier lifestyle doesn't have to be boring! We recently caught up with the mother-of-three and asked her just how to make a healthy salad at home for our brand new TIPS & TRICKS series? Check it out below.
Psst... Uma Uma also serves variety of Vegetarian menus at their adorable place located in Blok M area.
1) Hi Tania! Can you tell us more about yourself?
I am Tania Davina Rakhman, a mother of 3, former corporate lawyer, a passionate homecook, who is learning everyday to cook and eat better for the family.
2) Kindly share with us what kind of ingredients to use for a healthy salad
You can put just about anything in your salad, there’s no certain rule, as long it’s fresh and multi colored! (You know the saying the more colors on your plate, the better? So true!). I can whip up a great salad with ingredients that I get from my local veggie guy (aka tukang sayur). Basically you gotta have your leafy greens (darker colors means higher nutritional content), your crunch (your fave crunchy veggies like carrots, cucumbers or be creative and add in nuts, seed or even tortillas!) and a bit of creaminess (sprinkle your favorite cheese!).
3) What about dressings? Any tips on how to make a good one?
Homemade dressings are the best! Once you start making them, you really can't go back to the store bought ones. The simplest and most basic ways to start your own dressing is to combine different types of vinegar (rice, red wine, apple cider, balsamic, you name it!) and oils (olive, canola, etc), mixed with different herbs and spices, seasoned with salt & pepper and sometimes a touch of honey.
4) Any creative tips on how to make your salad not boring?
I like to throw in some fruits for some sweetness, more variety of crunchy bits such as wontons, candied nuts or even savory granola. Also, I like to arrange and serve my salads in pretty plates so they look even more appetizing!
